Denatured Alcohol

Denatured alcohol is ethanol that has been rendered undrinkable by adding denatonium benzonate (Bitrex) to make it unpalatable, thus exempting it from beverage alcohol taxes. Ethanol, also known as ethyl alcohol (CH3CH2OH), is frequently used as a disinfectant and antiseptic; however, its effectiveness is contingent upon the inclusion of water. Therefore, pure ethanol (100%) is ineffective. Solutions with concentrations between 60% and 95% demonstrate the most effective bactericidal properties. Furthermore, ethanol plays a role as a solvent and preservative in various pharmaceutical and cosmetic products. Platanis denatured alcohol, available at concentrations of 70% and 90%, retains both its bactericidal and its solvent properties, making it suitable for various industrial and household applications such as a cleaning and disinfecting agent.

CAUTION! Denatured alcohol should not be consumed as it can cause serious health risks, including poisoning and blindness.
